Day one on the ground at the Montréal Worlds — and what a day. I found the course, tracked down my media credentials and then it was off to check out the start/finish, the press area and give you a look behind the curtain at what covering a World Championships actually looks like — including where all those race reports you read get written when the racing is over.
Then it was time for the actual bike race. And what a race to see live.
Isabella Holmgren lit things up, driving the breakaway and carrying Canadian hopes right into the finale. I found myself roadside watching the rainbow jersey battle fly past before Holmgren went all the way to a final sprint for the world title against Viktoria Chladonova of Slovakia.
From chasing credentials in the morning to watching a Canadian fight for gold, and then heading over to the podium and awards ceremony afterwards — this was a pretty damn good introduction to my first World Championships. And a very different way to cover bike racing than sitting behind a computer screen.
I hope you’re digging this PEZ Roadside at the Worlds – lots more to come from Montreal.
