Wahoo KICKR HEADWIND Review: Smart Cooling for Indoor Cycling

various views of the Wahoo KICKR HEADWIND indoor cycling fan

The Wahoo KICKR HEADWIND smart fan brings targeted airflow and automatic cooling to your indoor cycling setup. In our Wahoo KICKR HEADWIND review , PEZ’s Alastair Hamilton explains why its heart rate controlled airflow made it one of his most valued training accessories—and why he prefers that setting to speed-based cooling.

The KICKR HEADWIND was the first ever smart fan, designed with the cyclist in mind. Its Targeted Airflow Pattern mirrors the shape and position of a cyclist’s body while riding. The KICKR HEADWIND is sensor controlled so as your speed or heart rate increases, so will the fan speed, and there are also 4 manual speed settings should you want to set your own ideal airflow. With speeds of over 30 mph (48 kph), the KICKR HEADWIND will keep you cool during the toughest training sessions.

On Test: Targeted Airflow That Hits the Spot

Alastair Hamilton PEZ Sez: Of all my bits of indoor training equipment, I would say that the Wahoo KICKR HEADWIND is by far the most important accessory. Yes, the smart trainer is the most important thing, but a good fan is a must for Zwift, Rouvy, and other indoor cycling training apps. Before the Headwind arrived, I was using an old fashioned propellor fan on a stand, it worked, but it was either too windy or not strong enough. That is certainly not the problem with the Headwind.

It doesn’t take up much room either

A few years ago, indoor training was just for the winter months, but the advantage of home training is the ability to train more scientifically on the smart trainer with a power meter, when you might not have one on your bike. Plus, being able to jump on the trainer for an hour when it fits in with work and family life, is a luxury.

As indoor training has become a year-round pursuit for anyone looking for efficient and convenient training miles – equipping the pain cave makes sense any time the of year. Here in Spain there is the added problem of it being TOO hot, especially in the middle of the day and if you have to write Tour de France race reports, an evening ride is out of the question.

App Controls and Everyday Practicality

So how good is it? Very! And now that I have used it, I couldn’t do without. As much as I like the Wahoo KICKR Climb, I could live without the front of the bike going up and down. The Headwind is controllable from the app on your mobile phone, which is very useful, but I preferred the setting that controls the speed of the airflow with your heart rate. It can also be controlled by your virtual speed, this I wasn’t so sure of as you want more cooling when climbing, which would be at a lower speed. Great on a flat, fast ride, but not for the hills. The shape of the Headwind directs the air straight at you, like being in your own little wind tunnel.

PEZ Verdict: A Fan Worth Making Room For

The bottom line is that a fan for indoor training does help with body cooling and temperature regulation, so why not get a good one that is made for the job.
