Giro Stage 5 Chaos: Arrieta Outsprints Eulálio After Crashes, Wrong Turns & Maglia Rosa Drama

Absolute chaos exploded across southern Italy on Stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia as Spain’s Igor Arrieta survived crashes, confusion and even a wrong turn to steal one of the most dramatic victories of the race so far. In torrential rain and on treacherous roads into Potenza, Arrieta somehow clawed his way back to out-sprint Portugal’s Afonso Eulálio — who at least rode himself into the Maglia Rosa after race leader Giulio Ciccone cracked under pressure in the brutal conditions.

The stage rolled out from Praia a Mare on a long, relentlessly rolling day that never really allowed the peloton to settle. While there were only two categorized climbs on paper, the route constantly twisted up and down through southern Italy, with the brutal Montagna Grande di Viggiano — 17 kilometers at 4.7% with nasty ramps over 10% — looming as the day’s key selection point, even if the summit still sat 40 kilometers from the finish.

With the terrain perfectly suited to opportunists, everyone in the bunch seemed to know this was a breakaway stage from the start. Even torrential rain couldn’t dampen the aggression. Victor Campenaerts and the riders of Team Visma | Lease a Bike were especially active, while race leader Ciccone even briefly slipped into an early move before order was restored.

The relentless pace and miserable weather quickly shattered the peloton. With still 180 kilometers remaining, barely forty riders were left in the main group — although importantly, all the GC favorites were still present.

The Route

A wavy stage running entirely inland, between Calabria and Basilicata. The route starts uphill, entering the Parco del Pollino with a categorised ascent to Prestieri (over 12 km in length, but with manageable gradients). The route runs mostly downhill through the Sinni river valley, with several counter‑sloping stretches, especially in urban areas. Past Francavilla in Sinni, the stage enters the Agri river valley and reaches Viggiano to negotiate the hardest climb of the first stages, the Montagna Grande di Viggiano (6.6 km, max. 15% pitch). The route continues with a wavy profile up to the Pierfaone ski resort, and then descends into Potenza.

Fun Facts About Today’s Stage

  • 15th finish in Potenza, the first since 2022, when stage 7 was won by Koen Bouwman, at his first success in the Giro (3 Dutch riders in the top 4: record).
  • May 13 marks the Giro’s birthday: the very first stage took place on May 13, 1909 (Milan–Bologna), and was won by Dario Beni.
  • May 13 was long considered Robbie McEwen’s day: he won 4 of his 12 Giro stages on this date.
  • 33rd finish in Basilicata: last year the region featured the finish in Matera, won by Mads Pedersen.

Splits on the Climb

The brutal conditions finally split the race apart as Afonso Eulálio, Guillermo Thomas Silva and Einer Rubio forged clear before a larger group bridged across, including Victor Campenaerts, Igor Arrieta and Jhonatan Narváez. Behind them, Lidl-Trek struggled to control the gap as race leader Giulio Ciccone rapidly lost teammates in the rain.

On the slopes of the Montagna Grande di Viggiano, Arrieta attacked solo and quickly opened a dangerous advantage thanks to hesitation behind. Christian Scaroni tried to organize the chase, but instead helped launch Eulálio across to the Spaniard near the summit.

Once united, the two leaders rode brilliantly together while the chase behind collapsed. Their advantage grew from two minutes to four, leaving Ciccone isolated except for Derek Gee and virtually powerless to defend the Maglia Rosa.

Up front, Arrieta and Eulálio continued to drive hard over the soaking roads — although Arrieta looked increasingly on the limit. With around ten kilometers remaining, the Spaniard slid out on a downhill corner and hit the deck hard, losing more than thirty seconds.

It looked like Eulálio was riding straight toward both the stage win and the Maglia Rosa.

But then the Giro struck again.

With seven kilometers to go, Eulálio crashed in almost identical fashion. Suddenly the race was turned upside down once more, and somehow the two leaders were reunited.

Eulálio appeared ready to settle for the pink jersey and drove hard on the front to maximize his GC advantage. Then, unbelievably, Arrieta missed a turn and briefly rode off course, losing another handful of seconds.

Surely that was the end of it.

Not quite.

In the final meters, Arrieta somehow clawed his way back to the Portuguese rider, launching one last desperate sprint to steal a stunning Giro stage victory from the jaws of disaster.

Hugs after a day of shared suffering and success

Speaking seconds after the finish, the stage winner Igor Arrieta said: I’m really happy achieve this victory after my three teammates crashed at the beginning of the Giro and after I crashed as well today. I didn’t think it was lost when I crashed, I wanted to try till the end. I was completely empty in the last kilometres but I knew Eulalio was also the same. We both deserved the victory but in the end, I took it. I want to say thank you to my girlfriend, my family, my trainer who have always been there for me”.
