VUELTA’26 STAGE 16: Matthew Brennan made it four wins at the 2026 Vuelta a España with another crushing sprint victory at La Rábida. Wout van Aert delivered another dream lead-out, and the 21-year-old Brit finished the job with daylight behind him. Bryan Coquard took second, Vito Braet was third, and Van Aert still managed sixth after launching his teammate.
The pure sprinters had waited a long time for this one.
After a succession of climbs, breakaways and brutally hot stages, Tuesday finally offered one of the flattest routes of the 2026 Vuelta. Stage 16 covered 181.1 kilometres from Cortegana to La Rábida, with a difficult opening section followed by a largely flat run to the finish.
A strong breakaway might have caused trouble early, but the profile offered the fast men one of their best—and possibly last—opportunities of the race.
A bunch sprint looked almost inevitable. Five riders still decided to test the theory.
Five Riders Try to Spoil the Sprint
The seemingly tireless Kevin Vermaerke attacked again, adding yet another breakaway to his already busy Vuelta.
The UAE Emirates XRG rider was joined by Valentin Madouas, Simon Dalby, Jasha Sütterlin and Roland Thalmann, forming the day’s five-man escape.
The peloton saw no immediate danger, but Visma | Lease a Bike wasn’t prepared to let the gap grow. With Brennan already sitting on three stage victories, the team had every reason to control the race and create another sprint.
The advantage never stretched beyond two minutes.
For a moment, the wind threatened to provide more excitement. The peloton split into two groups, raising the possibility of a proper echelon battle, but the separation didn’t last. The two halves soon came back together, and the race returned to its expected script.
Visma Keeps the Break Close
Visma continued setting the pace and kept the five leaders within reach throughout the stage.
With just under 30 kilometres remaining, Vermaerke, Madouas, Dalby, Sütterlin and Thalmann were caught. Their day out front was over, and the sprint trains began preparing for the inevitable fight over position.
But getting to the sprint was far from relaxing.
A strong coastal wind increased the tension among both the GC and sprint teams. Speeds climbed dramatically as the peloton charged towards La Rábida, with every team trying to keep its leaders near the front and out of trouble.
The pressure briefly split the bunch again. Uno-X Mobility was caught on the wrong side of the gap, but the Norwegian team escaped without any serious consequences as the peloton regrouped.
The Sprint Trains Take Over
The race entered the closing kilometres at full speed, with teams fighting to establish their sprint trains.
Soudal Quick-Step moved to the front for Alberto Dainese as the peloton passed under the flamme rouge. But Visma still had its two biggest weapons perfectly positioned.
Van Aert took control and drove Brennan towards the finish with another massive lead-out. The green jersey stretched the peloton, carried his teammate clear of the chaos and delivered him to exactly the right place.
From there, Brennan didn’t need any more help.

Brennan Destroys the Sprint
Brennan opened his sprint and immediately created a gap. There was no shoulder-to-shoulder fight and no need to examine a photo.
The young Brit was simply much faster than everyone else.
He powered across the line several bike lengths clear to claim his fourth stage victory of the 2026 Vuelta. Coquard emerged as the best of the rest in second, while Braet completed the podium.
After emptying himself in the lead-out, Van Aert still rolled across the line in sixth.
It was another dominant display from Visma | Lease a Bike and another remarkable result for Brennan, who is making his Grand Tour debut look almost ridiculously easy.
PEZ Take
PEZ SEZ: Four wins in a debut Grand Tour would be extraordinary for any rider. For a 21-year-old who doesn’t even consider himself a pure sprinter, it borders on absurd. Brennan has the finishing speed, but Visma’s confidence in him—and Van Aert’s willingness to bury himself in the lead-out—has made the combination almost unbeatable. Van Aert could have contested this finish himself, but instead he delivered Brennan to the line and still took sixth. That is teamwork with horsepower to spare.
Brennan now has four victories from sixteen stages, while Van Aert has two of his own and the green jersey firmly under control.
The rest of the peloton knows exactly what Visma is going to do. The problem is that nobody has figured out how to stop them.
