MIKE’S RIDE OF THE WEEK: MCKENZIE PASS
A few weeks ago I shared a ROTW from Glacier Point Road in Yosemite, one of the continental U.S.’ alpine highways that every spring opens to bicycles before allowing cars. (Though we missed that window and rode up as cars buzzed by.)
Last weekend I decided it was time to head out to Central Oregon’s spectacular McKenzie Pass. Google Maps told me it was closed to all traffic; I decided to risk it, figuring that even the out-and-back to the start constitutes a solid ride.
As I approached the start of the climb to the pass, I saw that the road was indeed closed — and that cyclists were descending from beyond the closure.
Bingo!
I’d ridden this climb before: It’s gradual at first, and not beautiful, passing through acres and acres of charred forest. But then it kicks up, and then begins to roll; then you pass through a practical tunnel of lava, and then emerge, atop the pass, into a vast lava field with stunning views of the Three Sisters mountains.
I traded waves with dozens of fellow cyclists enjoying the relative safety of riding McKenzie pass devoid of cars. But this road rarely sees much traffic; today I’m reserving the right to share another ROTW from McKenzie pass, next time adding the plunge down the forested west side.
