Julian Alaphilippe Bids Farewell to the Peloton
For a moment — post-prime Sagan and pre-present era van der Poel, van Aert and Pogačar — Julian Alaphilippe was the most exciting rider in the peloton.
Granted, sometimes he was more exciting than he needed to be, swinging his bike as he ripped off the front in an attack that lasted mere seconds, or mugging for the camera as he insistently drove a break that was sure to be caught — but at times, like the 2019 Tour de France or the 2020 and 2021 World Championships, he was legitimately electric.
We’ve watched him try to muster that flair over the last couple of years, but crashes and, we suspect, age, have slowed him, especially relative to the ratcheting up of of speed in WorldTour racing.
