We’re right in the middle of our Montana season, and it’s one of my favorite times of the year. We get to spend our days riding bikes through Big Sky Country, sharing delicious meals, meeting new friends, and showing people the place I’ve always called home. Summer here is hard to beat. The sun rises early and sets late, the days are warm, the evenings are cool, and oftentimes I never want the day to end.
Montana has always been part of who I am. It shaped my love of bikes, the outdoors, and the sense of adventure that eventually became The Cycling House. Even after years of running Cycling House trips here, there are still moments when I have to pinch myself. Being able to come home each summer and share this place with our guests is one of the greatest privileges of my life.
We offer several incredible Montana trips, and each one has its own style. But if there were one trip that captures everything I love about this place, it’s our Montana Luxury Gravel Ranch trip.
From the endless gravel roads and wide open landscapes to evenings around the dinner table at a beautiful ranch, this trip feels like Montana at its very best. So I thought it’d be fun to share my top 11 reasons why this trip has become the one that, for me, tells the Montana story better than any other.

11 Reasons Why I Love our Montana Gravel – Luxury Ranch Trip
1. The Gravel Riding
I’ve ridden bikes all over the world, and I still think Montana has some of the best gravel riding anywhere.
What I love most is the variety. One day we’re pedaling through wide open ranchlands with mountain views in every direction. Next we’re following the legendary Great Divide Route through the Seeley Swan Valley. Every ride is different, but they all share the same feeling of freedom that comes from miles of quiet gravel roads and almost no traffic.
These aren’t roads you accidentally stumble upon. They’re the kind of hidden gems that we’ve spent years exploring and fine tuning for our trips, and I can’t think of a better way to experience Montana than from the seat of a bike.

2. The Ranch
The Cliff Ranch is so much more than a place to stay. Nestled on 3,500 acres in the heart of the Blackfoot River Valley, it becomes our home for the week. The ranch has been beautifully restored with thoughtful, high end finishes throughout, creating a space that’s both luxurious and incredibly comfortable.
After each ride, guests spread out across the ranch, relaxing on the porches, soaking in the hot tub, sharing stories over appetizers, or simply taking in the views. It’s a place that naturally brings people together, and by the end of the week, it truly feels like home.
We’ve stayed in some incredible places over the last 20 years, but Cliff Ranch is one our guests never forget.

3. The Blackfoot River
The Blackfoot River has a way of weaving itself into most rides during the week. We cross it on our rides, stop to cool off with a quick swim on warm afternoons, and in the evening simply sit along its banks, relaxing.
Made famous by A River Runs Through It, the Blackfoot is one of Western Montana’s most iconic rivers, and staying right on its doorstep is something really special. If you enjoy fly fishing, bring a rod. There are few better ways to spend an hour before dinner than casting a line into one of the most beautiful rivers in the West.

4. What Our Guests Say
One of the best parts of my job is catching up with guests after their trip and hearing about their experience. As The Cycling House has grown, I can’t be on every trip anymore, but one of the things I’m most proud of is that our team has carried on the same tradition and values that we’ve built over the last 20 years.
Again and again, I hear the same things. Guests talk about the warmth of our guides, the friendships they made, the great rides, and how they had a wonderful trip. Those conversations mean the world to me because they remind me that while the ranch, the scenery, and the gravel are amazing, it’s the people who make this trip truly special.
I’ll let a few of our guests tell the rest of the story…
“If you want to have a great time, with top notch service, great trails, amazing food, guides that are a blast to hang with and know how to have a good time — this is your trip. I was so impressed with the accommodations at The Cliff Ranch (wow), the tiny details the guides thought through, and the level of service that was provided.”
Karen B.
“The Cycling House is awesome. They are always looking for ways to improve, but I can’t imagine how they could do better. What a great venue at The Cliff Ranch! The food and guides were amazing.”
Mike G.
“This was an absolutely extraordinary trip. The rides were amazing; the food was incredible; and – and this is no small “and” – the staff were fun, kind, terrific people. It was a first class, professional operation from start to finish, and I can’t wait to ride with them again.”
Jason B.
5. The Food
Food has always been a huge part of The Cycling House experience, and this trip is no exception. Our chefs prepare fresh, healthy meals each day using as many locally and regionally sourced ingredients as possible, including incredible Montana meats and seasonal produce.
But for me, it’s about more than what’s on the plate. Some of the best moments of the week happen around the table, where stories from the day’s ride are shared, new friendships are formed, and nobody seems to be in a hurry to leave. Those meals at the ranch have a way of becoming just as memorable as the riding itself.

6. The Views
Montana isn’t called Big Sky Country by accident. Every ride showcases a different side of this incredible state, from sweeping views of the Mission Mountains, the Swan Range, and the Bob Marshall Wilderness to the wide open ranchlands of the Blackfoot Valley and Ovando area. Along the way, you’ll pedal beside crystal clear rivers like the Blackfoot, Clearwater, and Swan, all beneath The Big Sky. There are plenty of moments when you’ll find yourself stopping, not because you have to, but because the view is simply too good to ride past.

7. The Wildlife
One of the things I love most about riding in Montana is that it still feels wild. It’s common to see deer, elk, bald eagles, osprey, foxes, and countless other birds along the routes. If we’re lucky, we might even spot a moose or bear… from a safe distance. You never quite know what you’ll see, and that’s part of the adventure.

8. The Nights
This might be my favorite part. Campfires, bright stars, cool summer evenings, and lingering around after dinner is over (unless you’re ready to turn in and rest up for tomorrow’s ride!). There’s something about Montana nights that naturally slows you down and reminds you to appreciate where you are.
Whenever I’m at Cliff Ranch, I always make a point to look up before heading to bed. With almost no light pollution, the stars are incredible, and it’s one of those simple moments that reminds me why I love this place so much.

9. Missoula
Our Montana Luxury Gravel Ranch trip begins and ends with a shuttle from Missoula, my hometown and one of the best outdoor towns in America. With fantastic coffee shops, breweries, restaurants, a vibrant downtown, and the beautiful University of Montana campus, it’s well worth spending an extra day exploring before or after the trip.
If you’ve never been, I highly recommend extending your stay. And be sure to drop me a line before you arrive. I’d be happy to share some of my favorite local spots, from the best places to grab breakfast or a beer to my favorite rides and hidden gems around town.

10. A Trip You Won’t Find Anywhere Else
There are plenty of cycling trips out there, and there are plenty of luxury vacations too. But I honestly don’t know of another experience that combines world class gravel riding, a beautiful private ranch, the Blackfoot River, incredible food, river floats, and authentic Montana hospitality quite like this one.
What truly brings it all together, though, is our team. Their warmth, attention to detail, and genuine care for every guest are what transform a great trip into an unforgettable experience.
It’s a trip we’ve spent years refining, and I’m incredibly proud of what our team has created.

11. It Feels Like the Montana I Want You to Experience
When we started The Cycling House over 20 years ago, I never imagined I’d someday be bringing guests back to the roads, rivers, and valleys that shaped my childhood.
This trip isn’t just a collection of great rides or beautiful places. It’s my chance to share the Montana that I know and love. Every year, I find myself falling in love with this place all over again. Seeing it through the eyes of our guests reminds me just how special it is and how fortunate I am to call it home.
If you’ve been thinking about riding in Montana, we’d love to show you this corner of the state. I think you’ll leave understanding why it means so much to me and the TCH team.
I hope you’ll come experience it with us someday.
