4iiii Viiiiva HRM: Most of us wear a heart rate monitor, even if we don’t use the information to improve our fitness and training, but we do know if we have done too much, not enough, or maybe your coming down with a cold. 4iiii have released a new Heart Rate Monitor, the Viiiiva and PEZ has put it through its paces.

Comfortable and secure
Alastair Hamilton PEZ sez:
I’ve had quite a few heart rate monitors over the years. The first one I had would have been in the mid 80’s, I can’t remember who made it, but it had a chest strap and a cable that ran down your arm to a watch. Of course I had no idea what I was doing and probably rode my slowest evening TT because I was looking at the watch. Anyway since then I’ve had Cat Eye, Polar, Garmin and Wahoo, all worked well… until they didn’t. Now 4iiii, the power meter guys in Cochrane, Alberta have a HRM, introducing the Viiiiva.

Connecting to the 4iiii app

4iiii app workout and settings
The Viiiiva is very much just ‘click-and-play’. After you put in the CR2032 coin cell battery and slide the connectors into place either side of the unit, it just works. I downloaded the 4iiii app which you can use for workouts, but you will probably use your HRM with your bike computer, whichever that is. In my case I have two Wahoo computers, a ROAM and an ACE, also the Wahoo app on my phone. All very easy, just do a device search and 10 seconds later all is linked.

No problem connecting to Wahoo
Connecting to Zwift (or any of the other indoor cycling apps) is the same as every other time you go for an indoor ride. Log in, connect to HRM and that’s it.

Connect to Zwift
So connecting is easy, what about the HRM strap itself? The strap is made of a soft elastic material that is adjusted with a two buckle system. The rubber sensors are around 12cm long, they are a little thicker but still soft and flexible. The strap fastens at the front where two metal bars slide into the HRM unit with a noticeable click as it goes into place to be held securely. Easy to put on and take off with a comfortable feel.

Rear battery replacement
My only negative thought was ‘why isn’t it rechargeable?’ 4iiii’s reason is quite plausible: “4iiii opted for coin cell batteries to ensure the 540+ hour battery life remains consistent over the years without the degradation typically seen in internal lithium-ion batteries. It also ensures that athletes don’t have to worry about charging another device frequently; a quick battery swap once a year (or less, depending on usage) keeps it maintenance-free for long-distance training.”
I’ve been using the Viiiiva HRM for about a month and like all good monitors you forget you are wearing it. So far it has connected straight away and I’ve not had any drop outs or lost info. Obviously I’m nowhere near 540 hours of use, so I’ve not needed a new battery and there has been no problems. The price is similar to Wahoo and Garmin and I would guess the accuracy and dependability will be as good, or maybe even better… but time will tell.
